From the Studio to the Stage

Behind The Breaks is a bracket style elimination event where producers go head to head using the same source material until there is only one left. The producers are given a sample pack of 8 songs from which they must create 8 beats. At the competition each opponent from the first round is randomly selected and the rest of the competition progresses in a double elimination battle.

Our first 10 competitions: Fela, Marvin vs Stevie, Snatch, Coolie High, Dead Presidents, Prince, Kanye, Mobb Deep, Outkast, Rza.

The event started out as a part of a week long celebration of the legendary Fela Kuti. Since that first battle we've continued to highlight artists, movies and experiences that have been influential in some way to music production culture. Other times we'll grab something that had a huge cultural impact outside of music, the Snatch edition is a perfect example of that.

Prince Paul addresses lets the producers know what he's listening for.

Over the years we've featured over 60 producers resulting in a community that has been supporting each other year after year both on and off the stage. In 2016 we were blessed with the opportunity to fulfill a dream of having the person that we're paying homage to, participate as a judge. The Prince Paul Edition was certainly a high point of the event series.
